Shadow Cottage Daylesford won the 2017 Architecture Award in the category of Residential Architecture – Houses Alterations and Additions. We are thrilled and wish to thanks our wonderful clients, a great builder and the highly respected jury.
The jury citation:
The Shadow Cottage Daylesford is an unassuming and refined home, which celebrates its bushland setting. The siting of MRTN Architects addition is respectful to its environment, with a design that embeds ESD principles and exceeds an 8-star rating.
Externally painted a crisp white, the front rooms have been retained as private sleeping areas with the addition of a shared bathroom. To the rear, emerging from the shadow, the asymmetrical addition provides a clear delineation between old and new. Clad externally in dark stained timber, the roof eaves step with the overall building form to follow the gentle low slope of the site. The views have been curated to take in the surrounding eucalypts, framing at a low level the trees and ground cover for full immersion in the bush experience.
The collaboration of architect and client has been carefully considered, creating well thought-out interior spaces that are consistent and demonstrate commitment to reuse and recycle.
The Shadow Cottage, high and proud on the site, contrasts the Victorian workers cottage; its low black stealth clad addition creates a connected, cohesive, and sustainable home.
