Double Monk Shoe Store is located in an increasingly upmarket shopping area of Fitzroy, close to the intersection of Smith Street and Gertrude Street. The focus of the shop and the obsession of the owners’ is English, handmade men’s shoes. They are on display from floor to ceiling, enveloped in an atmosphere designed to evoke the quality of the way they are crafted and the long history associated with the makers.

The design of the store begins and ends with the shoes. All the shoes are made by hand using the finest of leathers, when presented for sale they are slipped into velvet bags, wrapped in tissue and

presented in a printed box. Layer upon layer goes into their construction and presentation. The same can be said of the store itself. Warm stained timber, copper sheeting and pool table velvet are assembled one on top of the other to create an effect that has been described ‘as if the universe just had one big material upgrade.’

Entering into the store from Smith Street is like entering another time or a different place. All the materials, furniture and lighting combine to create an immersive space that encourages a lingering visit, a space that is as much a parlour or saloon as it is a shop.

The lighting and materials used; stained timber, burnished copper, stained glass and felt, were selected for their timeless qualities and then layered upon each other to impart a rich, warm glow. All materials and fixtures were also carefully selected to not only compliment the space but also contribute a story to the making of the space.
